The 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tonight for the Ducks in San Jose against the Presidents Trophy winning Sharks. The regular season is over and no matter how the Sharks do in the regular season over their playoff history they seem to collapse instantly when the playoffs begin. The Ducks have maybe the deepest defensive core in the playoffs and they will have their hands full with San Joses high power offense. The Ducks struggled for much of the 2008-2009 season but on trade deadline day they were very active and brought new life into the club. Gone however is the checking line from their 2007 Stanley Cup run with the trades of Sami Pahlsson to Chicago and Travis Moen to the Sharks only Rob Niedermayer remains with the club. And goalie Jonas Hiller who outplayed franchise goalie J.S. Giguere all season will more then likely begin the playoffs as the starter but over the Ducks past two playoff season the Ducks have started with the backup goaltender as the starter until Giguere stole the show if Hiller struggles early don't think head coach Randy Carlyle won't put Giguere in. These teams match up well and very well could be the best matchup to watch in round one.
